Sometimes it happens that DVD players are not able to open subtitles located in a separate file, in which case the best way out is subtitle insertion.

In this tutorial, you'll learn how easy it is to add subtitles for a movie. Adding subtitles for a movie consists in decoding a video file, dividing it into frames, and inserting subtitles for the corresponding frames. It sounds awful, but the appropriate programs will do all this for you.

What do you need: Virtual Dub program (free download), plugin for Virtual Dub Subtitler program, Subtitle program (a tool for converting various subtitle formats in .ssa format), corresponding codecs (for example, K-Lite Mega CodecPack), a bit of free time.

Download and install the Virtual Dub program, download and install the Subtitler plugin. After installing the plug-in, navigate to the directory in which it is installed and copy the Subtitler.vdf file into the plugins directory located in the Virtual Dub folder.

To get started, you should have subtitles in .ssa format on hand. Launch the Subtitle Tool. Click on Open and open the subtitles for conversion (sometimes, after opening the subtitles, the program asks for the number of frames per second, just click the Detect button from AVI and specify the video file for which these subtitles are intended). Click OK.

In the main program window, click the Save button and from the list of available functions, SSA (SubStationAlpha) script (for VirtualDub), select the directory where the subtitles should be saved, and click OK.

Launch the Virtual Dub program and click FileOpen video file. and find the video file you want to add subtitles.

Press button V> OK.

In the SubStationAlpha field. click on the button. and find the subtitle file that you created in the second and third step and click OK.

Press button V> Ctrl + P, select the type of video compression, and click OK.

Now you can save the movie file: click FileSave as AVI. , select the directory in which the movie should be saved and enter its name.

The movie will begin to render, this may take several hours (the rendering time depends on the length of the movie and the capabilities of your equipment). During the visualization process, the current status and preview of the movie are displayed.

Tip: First, take a small file (conversion takes less time) and try various program settings to achieve a satisfactory movie quality depending on the file size.
