A number of newer Canon digital camera models have a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. This eliminates the need to connect the camera to a computer every time through a compatible cable when you need to transfer and download images from it. Thus, you can transfer images from the camera to the computer, even if you are not near it. As long as you are connected to the same Wi-Fi access point or router, devices will be able to detect and communicate with each other. After that, you just have to deal with the camera software - CameraWindow, to manage this connection and transfer pictures and movies from the camera to the computer remotely.

Autoplay dialog does not appear

If when connecting the camera to a computer on the screen autostart dialog did not appear with the request to import images and videos, the autoplay function may be disabled. In this case, the image and videos can be imported to the computer using Explorer. This is done as follows.

  1. Open the Computer dialog box.
  2. In the navigation area on the left side of the window, under Computer right click on the digital camera and select Import images and videos.

(Optional) To add tags to images, enter a tag name in the box. Add tags to images (optional).

By default, the folder name consists of the date the images and videos were imported and the tag name.

  • Click the Import button.
  • A new window will open with the imported images and videos.
  • Tip: Optionally, you can enable autorun or configure autorun to automatically import images and videos from a digital camera.

How to work with flash cards

If your camera uses a removable flash memory card, such as an SD card or Compact Flash card, connect a card reader to the computer.

If you insert a flash memory card into a card reader, you can copy images to a computer without connecting a camera, so you can avoid connecting cables, installing additional software and draining the camera’s battery.

Some computers and laptops have built-in memory card readers. Check your computer’s documentation to determine if this device is available.

Why you cannot choose which images to import

Because Windows detects new images and videos and does not re-import old images and videos that are already copied to your computer, you can easily import images and videos in one step. Then, images can also be viewed in the image library.

Imported images can be viewed in the Windows Photo Viewer, where, thanks to the large viewing format, you can quickly decide which of the recently imported images to delete from your computer.

You can use the video library to organize your videos.
