More and more homeowners prefer to use painting rather than wallpapering as a way of wall decoration. Staining is often a more practical choice that looks more modern and relevant. Especially if you use unusual methods of painting walls that can transform the interior.
1. Starry sky
Even a small child can portray sky and stars on a dark wall. If you want the picture to look impressive at any time of the day, use fluorescent paints. Then the mini-sky will glow at night.
2. Abstract blots
To apply such a picture on the wall, a well-wrung, almost dry brush is used. Then in some places it is necessary to make streaks, spot applying paint in large quantities and allowing it to flow down freely.
3. Chaotic geometry
To apply this pattern, we recommend using masking tape. Stick it on a dried-out wall painted in the background color: two strips along the supposed line on the wall. Paint the free space between the two sections of adhesive tape in the desired color. After drying, carefully peel off the tape.
8. Color duet
The dark lower and light upper part of the walls is the usual option for painting walls, which recalls the public institutions of the Soviet period. In order to get rid of these associations, you can apply the paint not in two, but in three wide stripes.

To create the artistic effect of slight negligence, we recommend abandoning clear lines. For example, make the top contour uneven. Another option is the ombre, drawn using three blurry stripes with paints of similar shades.

Stage One: Planning
First you need to choose the width, color and location of the strips. It should be borne in mind that multi-colored stripes will make the room colorful and bright.
To avoid this, you can make strips of the same color, but different shades: for example, blue and blue, violet and lilac, etc.
You can take one color, but use different colors: matte and glossy.
These one-color options are suitable for both classic and modern monochrome interiors.
The stripes can be two colors or three, or maybe even more.
If multi-colored stripes will alternate with a strip of the same color (base), then everything is done at a time. Simply, each strip is immediately painted in its own color. If strips of different colors will be adjacent not only to the base, but also to each other, then additional painting steps will be required (more on this below).
It is necessary to measure the lengths of those walls that will be painted, and divide them by the desired width of the strips. Will there be an integer number of stripes for each of the walls? If not, you can change the planned width of the strips (for example, 10 cm was originally planned, but for an equal number of strips they can be made 10.25 cm each) or make one of the strips in the most inconspicuous corner a little more or less than the others.
If desired, the strip width can be made different: for example, cream stripes are wide, and red ones are narrower.
Today, wide-striped walls are in fashion. Its width is from about 10 to 30 cm.
On a sheet of paper, you can make a plan for the future arrangement of strips on the wall, so as not to get confused later.
Stage two: painting the walls in the base color
The base color is the color of one of the stripes. The base should be the color of the lighter strip. If, for example, you paint the walls in a cream-blue strip, then the cream color should become the base.
If you are going to paint the walls with stripes of the same color, but with different textures (matte and glossy), you need to use matte paint as the base.
First, the walls are painted in the base color. If previously the walls were already painted with a darker paint, you must either remove it using special solvents from the hardware store, or first paint the dark walls with white paint, and then after it has completely dried, apply the base color.

After applying the base color, you need to wait until it dries completely. Typically, the package of paint indicates how long it dries. If it is a water dispersion paint, you can start creating strips the very next day after applying the base layer.
Stage Three: Measurements and Marking
Now you need to arm yourself with a building tape measure, alcohol level and a simple pencil or chalk. We begin to measure from a dark corner from above, drawing lines down (if they are vertical) or from corner to corner (if horizontal). An alcohol level will help make the stripes even.
Stage Four: stick masking tape
Having drawn the lines, we proceed to gluing the masking tape.
How to paint the walls with stripes? Using masking tape
Adhesive tape is glued inside those stripes that remain in the base color!
At the same time, it must be glued exactly along the line drawn on the wall so that the line remains unsealed.
This line will be painted over if it is applied with a pencil. If the marking was done in chalk, after sticking the masking tape on the line, wipe it with a dry cloth.
Each glued tape of adhesive tape needs to be smoothed - for this you can use a regular plastic card or a special ironer. This is necessary so that the tape tightly covers the wall and does not get paint under it.
Do not forget to stick masking tape on the joints of the wall and ceiling, as well as walls and floors, thereby limiting the place of painting and protecting against painting those surfaces that do not need to be painted.
Step Five: Staining
If the strips are wide, you can paint with a small roller. If narrow - you have to work with a brush. A single coat of paint is usually sufficient if the base and second colors are close. If the colors are completely different, it might be worth planning two layers. The second coat is applied a few hours after the first. But in order to qualitatively paint the striped walls, it is better to do with one layer.
If, in addition to the base, there are not two, but more colors, then each strip is immediately painted in its own color.
You need to paint carefully with the approach to the masking tape so that there are no unpainted spots at the joints of the strips. Paint is applied from top to bottom.
Stage Six: Removing Masking Tape
The tape needs to be removed almost immediately after applying the paint (unless, of course, you do not have a second coat planned). If you wait until it dries completely and only then remove the tape, the paint may peel in places. Therefore, you need to remove the tape no later than an hour after applying the paint, but you can immediately after finishing the paint job. You can remove the tape from the bottom up or from top to bottom, carefully and slowly.
How to paint a striped wall in three colors?
If strips of several colors are planned, and they are adjacent to each other, you can do this: just stick tape on the base color, then paint each strip in its own color, and then remove the tape. Stripes of different colors with dividing strips of the base color having a width equal to the width of the tape will be obtained.

You can work on a different algorithm so that there are no dividing strips:
1. Application of the base layer

5. After complete drying, the adhesive tape is again glued - now inside the strips that are planned to be left in the base color, and inside those strips that were painted in the second color

Striped without dividing stripes
The lightest tone is selected for the base layer, and the darkest of the three colors is selected as the third color applied last.
How to paint striped walls and more: take masking tape and fantasy as assistants
Above, we examined the classic version of painting walls with stripes. But, armed with masking tape, you can nicely recreate with painting the walls.
If you want thin stripes on the wall, first paint the walls in the base color (the color of future stripes). Then glue the adhesive tape in the way your strips will be, and after that just paint the wall with a roller. All that remains is to remove the adhesive tape - and the wall will turn from a plain one into a striped one.
In this case, the adhesive tape can be arranged in any way: vertically, horizontally, with a herringbone (zigzag), diagonally, parallel or perpendicular.
If you stick the tape perpendicularly, you can paint the wall with squares and rhombs. The technology is the same as described above.

Tip. If you are going to paint the walls for the first time, you can practice on a small part of the wall or a piece of plywood, doing everything according to the algorithm: a base coat of paint, marking, masking tape, applying a second color, removing adhesive tape. Pay attention to how tightly the tape fell, whether the paint leaked under it, whether the tape peeled off easily, etc. Consider all the nuances and start painting walls.
Methods for forming a multi-color picture on the walls
The expected effect can be achieved by the following methods:
- The right choice of primary colors: they can be contrasting, or they can be next to each other on the color wheel. In the end, they can be just white and black.
- The combination of the texture of the painted surface. For example, the lines are the same color, but one is shiny and the other is matte.
- The relative location is horizontal, vertical, at complex angles.
Each of the described methods has its own areas of rational use, violating which can be captured by bad taste, and it will not be easy to eliminate it.
Walking the path of choosing contrasting colors, you should consider which room will be painted. For example, this path is undesirable for the bedroom, because it will lead either to the dullness of the walls, or, conversely, to an exciting effect, which is completely inappropriate for the bedroom. But for the children's room does not interfere with experimenting. Moreover, if your children take an active part in this, an optimistic perception of the striped room is guaranteed.
The combination of a smooth and rough surface of one or similar tones is a rather complicated method, since it will require the use of two paints that are completely different in their properties. This will significantly slow down the painting. In addition, in this case, it is especially important to choose the right combination of tones. Nevertheless, they should be slightly different from each other, and the rough strip should be darker than the glossy. In this way, you can color the bedroom, living room, dining room.
In turn, the choice of tone depends on where the room windows go: if on the sunny side, then the tones should be “cold”, if on the north - on the contrary, “warm”. Naturally, it is necessary to take into account the color scheme of furniture, interior doors, curtains, window openings, etc.
The direction of the lines is determined only by the relative size of the room. For rooms proportional to the size, the choice does not matter (in this case, you can also try the angular arrangement).
Stripes should be placed vertically for low rooms, and horizontally for long and tall rooms. The color is also selected depending on the cardinal points where the windows go. The alternating stripes of different widths will give a similar effect.
Preparation period
Preparation consists of the following steps:
- Selection of the type and color of paint.
- Preparation of the paint tool.
- Preparing walls for painting.
For the formation of strips are any paint intended for use in interior work. The least successful option is the use of oil paints: their piercing gloss will not make your room decorated in the "retro" style, but it will noticeably slow down drying. Oil paints are quite demanding on the quality of their application to the walls.
Enamel-based paints are more suitable for gloss: they dry quickly and do not leave unattractive brush marks. In general, to obtain strips, the main tools will be paint rollers of different widths. The dullness of the walls will be provided by coloring compositions based on water emulsions.
For painting you will need:
- roulette or bench scale to determine the desired bandwidth,
- level, to check the horizontal / vertical stripes,
- a set of paint rollers with a hard pile (there should be at least three rollers),
- a measuring cord with which you can "beat off" the strip marked on the wall,
- spatula for cleaning irregularities,
- masking tape (strips of parchment paper can also be used),
- set of decorative buttons,
- color crayon.
Before painting, the walls are thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust. If wallpaper was previously on the walls, then surface irregularities are removed with a spatula, and the troughs are thoroughly plastered. To do this, it is better to use an acrylic finishing putty: in this case there will be no excessive paint consumption. The wall prepared for painting should be of a light tone. This is important because otherwise, darker spots may appear where bands of lighter shades are marked.
After the wall is ready for painting, it is necessary to mark it. If it is intended to be painted with stripes of the same width, then the actual size of the wall should be divided by the selected strip width. In most cases, an integer will fail.
Here you can do two things: either adjust the original thickness of the strip (usually it will not change much), or, knowing where the high furniture will be permanently located there, intentionally violate the width of the strip by making one of them thicker / thinner. By the way, this method can be turned into an artistic device, if a strip of a different thickness is alternated with the usual one after a certain distance.
The scheme of alternating stripes of different colors
When determining the optimal strip width, it is worth remembering that stripes less than 20 mm and wider than 300 mm are not well perceived by the eye.
The most cautious, but always successful option is to draw on a scale a wall on a sheet of A4 or A3 paper and draw all the desired stripes on it. This will be clear and subsequently help to avoid mistakes when staining.
Strip technology
Having decided on the base color (it should always be brighter), the process of painting begins.Paint is applied with a paint roller, and, with subsequent vertical marking of the strips, the direction of movement of the roller should also be vertical (and vice versa).
After waiting for the painted wall to dry completely, they begin to form the actual stripes. Marking is performed using a level and a ruler and making marks with a measuring cord on which a layer of colored chalk is applied (the tone should correspond to the main one).
On the applied lines glued strips of adhesive tape. You can’t hurry: firstly, the structure of the baseline will be violated, and secondly, the stripes may turn out to be uneven. Adhesive tape tapes the entire surface, from floor to ceiling.
Having picked up the roller of the desired width, stripes are performed with its help. The number of passes will be determined by the contrast of the second color - if it is small, then you can form a strip in one pass of the painting tool. When the whole ornament is ready, carefully remove the tape from the wall.
As you can see, the process of obtaining stripes on the wall is quite simple. The main thing is not to rush and carefully choose the colors that are optimal for a particular room. Indeed, in each room of the apartment the stripes can be different.
