Wireless mice use Bluetooth technology to connect to your computer, freeing the desktop of extra cords. Since wireless mice use Bluetooth, they connect just like any other Bluetooth device, but with some other settings.

Wireless mouse connection

To pair with a computer, the wireless mouse must rely on an integrated transmitter that communicates with the receiver inside the computer. Most modern tablet computers and laptops have built-in Bluetooth radio modules. However, some desktop computers do not. If your computer does not support Bluetooth, purchase a Bluetooth adapter or select a wireless mouse with a USB key that serves as a receiver.

How to connect a wireless mouse to a computer running Windows 10?

  1. Open app Settings (press Win + I as a shortcut) and select Devices.
  2. In the left sidebar menu, select Bluetooth and other devices , then click the plus sign next to Add Bluetooth or another device in the right pane.
  3. In the popup window, click Bluetooth .
  4. Follow the instructions in the Add Devices Wizard. You will need to put the wireless mouse in pairing mode, the installation procedure for this mode depends on the manufacturer, so read the quick start guide. Windows will detect the mouse and add the appropriate drivers.

We connect a wireless radio mouse through a USB adapter

If a USB receiver is included with your mouse, and this is the only connection interface (or Bluetooth does not / does not work on your computer), then you need to connect this receiver to the USB port of a laptop, or a stationary computer.

After connecting, Windows should install the driver. I have already connected how many wireless mice, I have never encountered a problem when Windows cannot find, or install the right driver. If it happened that the system does not recognize the device, then you can try to download the driver, or software from the manufacturer’s website. We write in the search the name and model of our mouse. For example, "Logitech M185" and in the search results go to the official site Logitech. There we are already looking for the download section and download the necessary driver. But you are unlikely to have to do this.

We insert the battery into the mouse, or charge it and turn it on. Perhaps after that the indicator will light up (but it may not be).

After that, the mouse should immediately work. If it turns out that after connecting the wireless mouse does not work, then the first thing:

  • Make sure that the battery is not dead (replacing it) and that it is installed correctly.
  • Unplug and reconnect the USB receiver.
  • Reboot the computer.
  • You can go into the device manager and see if the adapter appears in the "HID Devices" section. If we connect the adapter from a Logitech mouse, the "Logitech USB Input Device" adapter should appear there. Name may vary.
  • You can check the adapter and mouse on another computer / laptop. You may have gotten married. This also happens.

In most cases, these devices connect and work without any problems. Especially in Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7.

Connecting a wireless mouse via Bluetooth (without receiver / adapter)

I want to clarify right away that most likely it will not work to connect the mouse to a stationary computer without an adapter. Since the PC usually does not have a built-in Bluetooth module. Therefore, first we need to choose a Bluetooth adapter for the computer, then connect and configure Bluetooth and only after that we can connect the Bluetooth mouse according to the instructions. Or use the Wireless adapter that comes with the kit (if your model supports this interface).

With laptops easier, there Bluetooth is built-in. True, it does not always work, because the necessary drivers are not installed. If there is no Bluetooth icon on your laptop in the tray and there is no adapter in the device manager, the corresponding settings in the parameters, then you must first configure and enable Bluetooth (for example, Windows 10). And in this article there is an instruction for Windows 7.

To connect, right-click on the Bluetooth icon and select "Add Device".

Turn on the mouse. Next, you need to activate the connection mode. There should be a button for this. On my mouse it is signed as "Connect". It must be pressed (possibly pressed and held). The indicator should blink actively. The activation process of the connection mode, of course, may vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the mouse. See instructions.

On the computer, in the window that already opens, select "Add Bluetooth or another device." Next, click on the item "Bluetooth". When our mouse appears in the list, just click on it. In Windows 7, a window immediately opens, in which the devices available for connection will be displayed.

A message should appear that the device is ready for use.

The mouse should already work. Click Finish. Connection completed.

In Windows 7, everything is about the same, only the windows and menu items themselves look different.

This is a program with which you can configure additional functions. For example, assign actions to additional buttons, adjust pointer speed, etc. It all depends on what kind of mouse you have. If the simplest, then this program may not be necessary for you.

If the computer does not find the Bluetooth mouse, then first of all, make sure that it is turned on and the connection mode is activated. Try connecting it to another device. You can even use your phone or tablet (on Android).

Radio frequency (with adapter)

This mouse is equipped with a small adapter (looks like a flash drive). As a rule, the size of this adapter is very modest: after installing it in the USB port, the protruding part is barely noticeable (shown in the photos below).

I would also note that, on average, mice in this category are cheaper than Bluetooth (today, prices are comparable to classic wired ones).

Consider connecting it step by step.

STEP 1

And so, first check the completeness: there should be a mouse itself, batteries and an adapter (see photo below). It is worth noting that the batteries do not always come with the mouse (when buying, pay attention to this!).

Note: 1) by the way, some novice users are faced with the fact that they can not find the adapter. The fact is that sometimes it is located in the battery compartment (inside the mouse). Apparently, manufacturers are doing so so that it is not lost.

2) Before starting the connection: disconnect your old mouse from the computer.

The completeness of the RF mouse

STEP 2

Turn the mouse over, open the battery compartment and install them (note the polarity).

STEP 3

Some mice are equipped with ext. switch. Check that it is in the “ON” position (ie, turned on). If you do not have such a switch, then the mouse, in principle, should start working immediately after installing the batteries.

Pay attention to the switch!

STEP 4

Connect the adapter to the USB port (after a few seconds you should hear the characteristic sound from Windows, which always happens when connecting USB devices).

STEP 5

Try to move the mouse, turn the wheel, press the right / left buttons. As a rule, after 1-2 clicks, the mouse should establish a connection and start working.

I note that some mice have specials. button for establishing communication (sometimes it is combined with the “DPI” button. It is located next to the wheel). If you have a similar button, click it.

In general, that’s all. If everything is all right with the mouse, the batteries are new (and have not yet been planted), then the mouse will start working. No ext. no settings are required.

STEP 6

If the pointer moving speed is too fast (slow), then you can go to the control panel (for this, press Win + R and enter the command control ), go to section "Equipment and sound" and open mouse settings (see screenshot below).

Control Panel - Mouse

Further in the section Index Options set the speed of the pointer. In general, everything is standard.

Bluetooth mouse

Bluetooth mice are less popular than previous ones. To use them, of course, a Bluetooth adapter must be installed on your computer / laptop (usually, all modern devices are equipped with it). Before setting up and connecting, I recommend checking if your Bluetooth is working (and turning it on if necessary).

Now, in fact, in essence.

STEP 1

Go into the device manager and see that the Bluetooth adapter is working fine and there are drivers for it (how to open the device manager).

The device is working properly (Bluetooth adapter)

STEP 2

Check if Bluetooth is turned on in Windows settings (on some laptops there is a special button on the device).

If you have Windows 10, go to the OS settings (a combination of Win + i buttons), in the "Devices / Bluetooth and other devices" section and check that Bluetooth is turned on. See the screenshot below for an example.

Is Bluetooth turned on (Windows 10)

STEP 3

Insert the batteries into the mouse and turn it on (some mice have a special switch, others do not).

Pay attention to the switch!

STEP 4

Click on the Bluetooth icon in the tray and run the function to add a new device (see example below).

Adding a Bluetooth device

Alternative option number 1

In Windows 10, you can add a Bluetooth device from the system settings (note: to open them, click Win + i combination), in the section "Devices / Bluetooth." (see screen below).

Windows 10 - adding a device

Alternative option number 2

If you have Windows 7 (or other options did not fit *): open the control panel (how to do this), section "Equipment and Sound Devices and Printers" .

After click on the link Add Device . Next, the setup wizard for new equipment starts.

Alternative way to add a device

STEP 5

After that, the hardware setup wizard will start: you need to indicate that you want to connect a Bluetooth mouse and click next. As a rule, after several. seconds, Windows will automatically connect the device and you can start using the mouse.

Not so long ago, Wi-Fi mice also appeared (released by HP). But, frankly, I haven’t worked for such a thing yet and therefore, as they say, know-how (yes, they have not yet become widespread).

Automatically disable touchpad after connecting a wireless mouse

On laptops, you can configure everything in such a way that after connecting the mouse (wireless, or wired), the touchpad will turn off automatically. And it is very convenient, because it only interferes. For example, when typing.

As far as I understand, this can only be done when the driver for the touchpad from the site of the manufacturer of the laptop is installed on your laptop. Checked on Lenovo, everything works.

Open Start (or search) and write "mouse". Open the "Mouse Options".

Go to "Advanced mouse settings."

The new window should have an ELAN tab (you may have another). You need to go to it and check the box "Disconnect when connecting an external USB mouse." Click "Apply."

All is ready! Now the touchpad will not work when the mouse is connected.

Instructions for connecting via adapter

The vast majority of wireless computer mice are connected to a laptop or computer through an adapter. The signal through the Wi-Fi protocol is transmitted from the device to the adapter, and then processed by the computer. The maximum range, as a rule, is 15 meters. Next, we will describe in detail how to connect a wireless computer mouse to a laptop. The instructions given will be relevant for those who are interested in how to connect a wireless mouse to a personal computer.

Mouse and adapter manipulations

If you have a wireless mouse, you first need to find and connect an adapter. As a rule, it comes in a box with the product itself or hides inside the mouse body. Usually it is located in a special recess or compartment on the back of the mouse.

Make sure the device has fully charged batteries. After that, insert the adapter into the USB port on your laptop / computer and turn on the mouse. Slide the switch to the On position. If the wireless mouse is a laser mouse (not to be confused with an optical one, in which the beam is not visible), then when it is activated, you will see a red light under it. Place it on a glossy surface and check operation.

How to connect a wireless mouse to a computer running macOS Mojave?

  1. Put the wireless mouse in pairing mode (see the instructions in the device’s documentation).
  2. Click Apple>System settings>Bluetooth .
  3. Your Mac will search for any device in pairing mode when you open the Bluetooth panel. When the computer finds a mouse, it will be displayed in a window. Click Couple .

Driver installation

Many mice are detected by most versions of operating systems and without specially installed drivers. At the same time, there are a number of models for which full operation the driver should be installed. You can find it:

  • on the disk that comes with the device,
  • on the global Internet on the manufacturer’s website.

In the search engine, enter the full name of your mouse and go to the official website of the manufacturer. You can usually download drivers in the “Support”, “Downloads” or “Software” sections. You can find the necessary drivers for your model on the Asus, A4tech, Corsair websites. These are the most popular and well-known brands among manufacturers of computer mice. If you do not know how to install a wireless mouse on a laptop, you can also look for information in the instructions for the mouse.

You can see the correct installation of the driver and even update it in the task manager. If the driver is not installed correctly, a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark will be in front of the device. Right-click on the device (for example, via the touchpad) and select "Update drivers" to update via the OS.

  1. Open the Bluetooth panel and make sure the switch at the top is set to On .
  2. Put the wireless mouse in pairing mode (see the instructions in the device’s documentation).
  3. Click in the list devices and complete the setup. You must complete this step within 20 seconds to avoid timeouts. When the mouse connects, its status will be displayed as Connected .
  4. Click the connected mouse to open the panel for customizing the device.

See our Bluetooth pairing troubleshooting guide if you need additional support.

Settings in the operating system

As a rule, with a correctly installed driver, settings in the OS do not need to be done. But through the interface, the user can configure various parameters of the mouse’s functioning: its sensitivity, pointer type, and much more. To go to the desired section, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the control panel. On Windows 10, click RMB on the Start icon.
  2. In the control panel, select "Mouse." A window with several tabs will appear where you can fully configure the device.
  3. In the "Hardware" tab, make sure that the system recognizes your device. In the field "Status" should be the inscription "The device is working fine."

Bluetooth connection

Next, we’ll show you how to connect a wireless mouse to your laptop using Bluetooth. To do this, your laptop or computer must have the appropriate module. On most laptops, such modules are installed from the factory. To connect a wireless mouse to a computer, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Bluetooth section. In the program panel in the lower right corner, right-click on the corresponding icon.
  2. Select "Add Device."
  3. The system will search for all devices. Among those found, naturally, click on your wireless mouse and click "Next."
  4. In the type of connection, select the last item labeled "Linking without a code." Click "Next."
  5. Wait until the device is configured.

In Windows 10, users can activate the search through the main menu. Click on "Start", select the "Settings" -> "Devices" sections. Set the Bluetooth enable slider to active, and in the found devices window, select the one you want.

Possible problems and solutions

Wireless equipment may not be connected for a variety of reasons, starting with incorrectly installed drivers and ending with marriage. We recommend the following configuration steps:

  • turn the mouse on and off several times, and then check again,
  • check if the battery is charged
  • check the operability of the USB port into which the adapter is installed (try connecting another device to it).
  • make sure the bluetooth module is working (connect your phone or tablet to the laptop),
  • install the driver (be sure to restart the computer after that),
  • make sure that the operation of the wireless adapter or bluetooth module is not blocked by administrator rights or other software (antivirus).

Solving them, you can freely use the wireless mouse. If the described methods did not help, take the mouse to the store and present your requirements for its inoperability (if the product is under warranty). Alternative options are to take the device to a service center or just buy a new mouse.
